HENRY COWELL - Mosaic
Chamber Music of Henry Cowell

Mode Records 72/73 (2-disc set)
Recorded in 1997, State University of NY at Purchase

This recording is a collaboration between Musicians Accord and the Colorado Quartet, and was produced by Laura Kaminsky. Musicians Accord: A New Music Project is a New York-based ensemble which presents concerts of contemporary music, and which has had an ongoing musical relationship with the Colorado Quartet. In March 1997, the two ensembles performed the works on this recording in concert at the New School in New York City, and recorded this disc a short time later. The Colorado Quartet performs four works on this CD, and members of the Quartet can also be heard in four other cuts on the recording.

Excerpts
from Reviews
Critics' Choice, by Peter Dickinson
Gramophone, January 2000
Ranked second on his top-ten list for 1999
"[My second choice is] the two-CD set of chamber works by Henry Cowell, the American pioneer who was open to so many musical cultures, but who also had original ideas about his inherited Western traditions. Fortunately, most of his experiments work and sound scintillating in these vivid performances."

**** Four-star rating
"After his death in 1965, [Cowell's] music almost disappeared, and for a long while there were no recordings available. That situation has changed during the last decade, but still there is probably no more complete or engaging tribute to this exploratory yet gentle musical spirit than a new double album of his chamber music, played by the Colorado String Quartet and the enemble Musicians Accord (Mode 72/73, ****). The chamber pieces tend to be more concise than the orchestral works, and these excellent performances set new standards of care and calm in Cowell performance."
